Custom Metal Gifts for Corporate Branding: Costs, MOQs & Lead Times

UKI Metal EditorialOctober 20269 min read

Metal gifts are the most durable promotional format available — a coin or keychain can still be in someone's drawer five years later. But the cost and timeline are driven by decisions most buyers make too late. This is the planning guide we give to marketing and procurement teams.

What drives the unit cost

Four factors move the price of a metal gift more than anything else:

Realistic budget bands

Exact pricing depends on your design, so treat the bands below as a planning tool rather than a quotation. The pattern that matters is the relationship between tooling and volume: at low quantities, tooling dominates; at high quantities, material and finishing dominate.

ProductTypical MOQCost behaviour
Custom coins (die-struck)300+ pcsHigher one-off tooling; low unit cost at scale
Metal keychains500+ pcsLower tooling; unit cost driven by plating and shape
Lapel pins / badges (enamel)500+ pcsColour count and enamel type drive cost
Medals & awards300+ pcsSize and ribbon specification are the main variables
Corporate nameplates1,000+ pcsLow unit cost; adhesive or fixing method matters

MOQ by product type

MOQ exists because of tooling and setup time, not because a factory wants to make ordering difficult. Two ways to work with it: order a smaller quantity in a standard shape that already has tooling, or accept a higher first order on a proprietary design and enjoy a lower unit price on every reorder afterwards. If a launch budget is tight, ask your supplier which of their existing shapes can carry your artwork — this is often the cheapest path to a fast, low-risk first order.

The production timeline, step by step

  1. Artwork and quotation (1–3 days): send vector artwork or a clear reference; you receive a quotation, and often a rendering for approval
  2. Tooling (5–10 days): mold or die is produced for your design
  3. Sampling (5–10 days): pre-production sample for your written approval — this is the step that prevents surprises later
  4. Mass production (15–35 days): depends on process and quantity; peak months around year-end run longer
  5. Quality inspection (1–3 days): final inspection before packing; third-party inspection can be arranged
  6. Packing and shipping (3–7 days + transit): courier 3–5 days, air freight 5–8 days, sea freight 20–40 days
Plan backwards from your event date. For a campaign with a hard date, allow 60–75 days from artwork approval with air freight. For year-end gifting, add two weeks — everyone is ordering in the same window.

The question to ask before you order

Ask your supplier one question before placing the order: what is your in-house inspection process, and can I see the record for my order? A factory with a documented multi-stage inspection routine will answer immediately. That answer tells you more about your order's quality than any brochure.
